Owner-led deck & fence staining

Ohio decks need staining every 2–3 years. Done right, they last decades.

A deck in Cleveland takes a beating. Summer UV breaks down stain pigments. Spring and fall rain soaks into unsealed wood. Winter freeze-thaw cycles open up grain cracks every time temperatures swing. After 2–3 years, an Ohio deck without fresh stain starts greying, cupping, and rotting in the joists. The same goes for cedar and pressure-treated fences.

Artisan Painting handles deck staining Cleveland projects the way they should be handled: strip the old finish, sand to bare wood, repair what’s failing, then apply the right stain for the wood and the climate. Penetrating stain on newer pressure-treated, solid stain on older boards, opaque on vertical fence. Every step matters — most failures we see on competitor jobs come from skipping the strip or rushing the sand.

Jeff has stained hundreds of decks and fences across Greater Cleveland. Same owner-led approach as our interior and exterior work — see the exterior painting page for the wider exterior scope. Whether you’ve got a 200 sq ft back deck in Brunswick, a wraparound in Chagrin Falls, or 200 feet of cedar privacy fence in Solon, we run the same disciplined process. Jeff and the Artisan Painting crew on a Greater Cleveland project
“Most deck staining failures in Cleveland come from skipping the strip and sand. The new stain can’t bond to old failing finish — it peels in a year. We do it right the first time, every time.”— Jeff, owner, Artisan Painting
What we stain

Deck & fence staining services.

Five outdoor-wood services, all with the same prep-first approach that holds up to Ohio winters.

Deck staining & sealing

Fresh stain on existing decks. Cleaned, lightly sanded, stained with penetrating or solid finish, sealed to protect against UV and water. Most jobs done in 2–3 days.

Deck refinishing & restoration

Old decks that need real work. Stripped of failing finish, sanded back to bare wood, weathered boards repaired or replaced, then stained like new.

Fence staining & painting

Cedar privacy fences, pressure-treated pickets, board-on-board, horizontal modern fences. Cleaned, prepped, and finished with stain or solid color paint depending on the look you want.

Pergolas, railings & outdoor wood

Pergolas, arbors, deck railings, posts, outdoor furniture, shed siding. Anything wood and outdoors gets the same prep-and-finish discipline as the deck floor.

Wood repair & board replacement

Soft, split, or rotted deck boards replaced. Hardware countersunk and filled. Failed fasteners swapped. Pre-stain repair work that makes the new finish last.

Stain type & color consultation

Transparent vs semi-transparent vs solid stain — see a Medina deck stain-type decision — guidance on which finish fits your wood, your taste, and the Ohio climate. Sample boards on the deck before commit.

The Artisan difference

The strip-and-sand prep that makes stain last.

Most deck staining Cleveland failures we see come from skipping or rushing the prep. Stain can’t bond to a failing old finish — it peels inside a year. The right prep makes the right product last 2–3 years.

  • 01
Clean & stripPressure wash to remove dirt, mildew, and loose finish. Where the old stain is still partially bonded, chemical stripper takes it off. Bare wood is the baseline for everything that follows.
  • 02
Sand to bareBelt sander on the deck boards, orbital on the railings, hand sand the tight spots. Splinters knocked down, grain opened up so the new stain can penetrate properly.
  • 03
Repair what’s failingSoft and split boards replaced. Loose railings re-fastened. Failed fasteners swapped. Hardware countersunk and the holes filled with exterior wood filler before stain.
  • 04
Apply the right stainPenetrating semi-transparent for newer pressure-treated, solid stain for weathered boards, opaque on vertical fence. Two coats where the wood and stain type call for it.
  • 05
Seal & protectUV-rated sealer where the wood and stain combination needs it. The protective layer that doubles the lifespan of the finish.
  • 06
Cure window respectedStain needs proper cure time before furniture goes back on the deck. We leave a clear walk-through on cure timing — usually 24–72 hours depending on weather.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How often should I stain my deck in Ohio?
Every 2–3 years for a deck that gets full sun, every 3–4 years for a shaded deck. The Ohio freeze-thaw cycle is what drives the timing — UV breaks down pigment, rain swells the wood, freezing cracks the grain. Signs it’s time: graying boards, water no longer beads, light splintering, or the previous stain looking patchy.
What’s the best stain type for my deck?
Three categories. Transparent: maximum grain visibility, lowest protection, best for new pressure-treated. Semi-transparent: best balance for most Cleveland decks — shows grain but seals well. Solid stain: full color coverage, best for weathered or repaired boards where grain isn’t worth showing. We bring samples to your deck and review under your light before deciding.
Do you strip and sand old decks first?
Yes — on any deck where the previous stain is failing or peeling. Stripping is what separates a deck staining Cleveland job that lasts three years from one that peels in twelve months. New stain can’t bond to a failing old finish. If you’re getting quoted without stripping on a peeling deck, the quote is for a job that will fail.
When is the best season to stain in Cleveland?
Late spring through early fall — typically May through October. We need surface temperatures above 50°F overnight for the stain to cure properly, and humidity below 85% for adhesion. We avoid staining into incoming rain, which means we sometimes hold a project a day or two for weather.
How much does deck staining cost?
Small decks (under 200 sq ft) and fence sections run $1,200–$2,400. Full deck strip-and-stain (300–600 sq ft) runs $2,500–$5,500. Fence staining (100–250 linear ft) runs $1,800–$4,800. Multi-deck or large properties are quoted on the on-site walk. See the pricing section above for what’s included in each tier.
